Goethe Institut New York, Spring Street, 2009 – 2010
ifau and Jesko Fezer in cooperation with Manuel Raeder
For a temporary library and office space of the Goethe Institut New York in Spring Street the division between visitors’ traffic and office work has been deregulated. The set up of the library shelves in the center of the characteristic SoHo factory floor constitutes an inclusive space modestly separating diverse collective working zones. An opulent set of light steel frame furniture offers the possibility to regroup work, meeting and event places as needed. Large foto murals mounted onto several walls reflecting other venues of the Goethe Institut in New York back into the office and public areas. The libraries index catalogue was printed as a wallpaper making visible all the book titles inside the space. The object Buch Arm was especially designed to allow a re-arrangement of the libraries structure and to highlight the contents in another way. The Buch Arm can also serve as a bookshelf extension and as a coathanger.
